Phosphorylethanolamine(PEA) is a biomarker for major depressive disorder and measured in blood plasma. PEA can distinguish patients with MDD from patients suffering from other mood disorders such as bipolar and adjustment disorder. Traditional biomarkers such as brain-derived neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) cannot make such a detailed distinction.
Significant difference in PEA between the control and MDD subjects (Wilcoxon rank-sum test: P < 0.0001 after Bonferroni correction) but no significant difference between the control and adjustment disorder subjects.
